The 8th annual exhibition of La Conserva della Neve opens on 17 September 2010 in Villa Borghese in Rome. La Conserva della Neve is a cultural and educational exhibition organised to introduce the Italian public and visitors from abroad to new forms of the art of landscape design and to the concept of botanical biodiversity

g

The exhibition will feature exclusively collection nurseries (i.e. nurseries that produce numerous varieties belonging to the same species or family of plants, thus the term “collection”), which have been selected from among the best in Italy and Europe. The event will host internationally known artists, scholars and landscape designers.

The exhibition has been created and curated by Lusi Nesbitt, President of the cultural association La Conserva della Neve and by Agronomist and Landscape Designer Dr. Maria Cristina Leonardi. After seven successful editions in Villa Lante in Bagnaia, La Conserva della Neve 2010 will be staged in Rome’s most famous and representative historic park, the Villa Borghese, the third weekend in September. The events will take place in the area known as Parco dei Daini, next to the Galleria Borghese and its Secret Garden.

This second enclave of the seventeenth-century garden was originally known as the Parco delle Prospettive, and was reserved exclusively for the Prince. Two colossal Termini, created by Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo, were placed at either end of the principal avenue. The park’s boundary wall forms the background for the Prospettiva del Teatro, completed in 1615 and richly decorated with ancient reliefs. The present name of this part of the villa, Parco dei Daini, recalls the presence of deer and gazelle here throughout the nineteenth century.

The decision to locate this year’s exhibition in Rome underlines the increasingly international and prestigious character of La Conserva della Neve. Moreover it will offer a greater number of visitors the opportunity to buy or simply learn about plant varieties produced by highly specialized nurseries outside the normal circuits. In addition, this decision reflects the real passion that the Association feels for Rome and its vast green heritage, covering 34 percent of the urban area and including a series of historic parks known around the world. In order to underline its commitment to safeguarding and maintaining the historic parks of Rome, the Association, in cooperation with the relevant institutions, will provide fall and spring bulbs for the Secret Gardens of Villa Borghese, and will continue to provide the park with other plant species, also for future events. Finally, in keeping with the United Nations declaration of 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, the 2010 exhibition of La Conserva della Neve wishes to highlight its contribution to the dissemination of the importance of biodiversity, which has always been one of the main objectives of the events organized by La conserva della neve.

The exhibition and events in Villa Borghese will present all the latest developments in the fields of nursery management and landscape design, as well as relevant literature and objects and furnishings related to gardening and the designing of open spaces and landscapes. Approximately one hundred exhibitors from Italy and abroad will participate in the event, all highly specialized and of the highest quality. Collections of ancient roses, aquatic plants, hydrangea, fruit trees, succulents, perennials, and many other plant species will be exhibited. Also important associations active in the sector, specialized publishers and booksellers, and dealers in antique and contemporary garden furniture, vases, tools and all manner of specialized items imaginable will be present to satisfy the curiosity and expectations of the visitors.

On the occasion of this 8th annual exhibition of La Conserva della Neve, visitors and participants will be offered special guided tours of Villa Borghese’s Secret Gardens organized by the Municipality of Rome.
